More from the Back Bay- Newbury Street

After Copley Square, we wandered up and down Newbury Street in the Back Bay. The Back Bay is Boston's largest "planned community". I learned that trains arrived full of dirt and gravel once every minute, 24 hours a day, 6 days a week, for 45 years (!) before the Back Bay was filled in and the size it is today. Because of the gradual building process, you can really see the changes in architecture block by block. It was every bit as posh as Beacon Hill, just newer, and more organized!
Now, Newbury Street, which used to be almost exclusively residential, is largely commercial: cute, trendy (expensive!) stores, inns and restaurants. A lot of the brownstones still have residential living on the 3rd and 4th floors. It was really fun wandering down the street and looking at all the goodies!
